In the center of a plaza located in Shreveport's Riverfront Park, two polished granite obelisks serve as a memorial to honor to the dedicated service of Shreveport's police and fire fighters. Plaques surrounding the obelisks bear the names of those who gave their lives to protect Shreveport citizens.
In 1996, the City of Shreveport commissioned Moore Planning Group, LLC (MPG) to design a plaza which incorporates symbols, inscriptions, plaques, and plant materials to provide a moving and respectful setting for this memorial. Two polished granite obelisks, representing the two services form the plaza's center piece, which provides a quiet place to pause and reflect on the importance of these public servants, and is frequently visited by office workers and tourists.
Some of the important considerations which helped shape the design include:
• Police officers and fire fighters were included in the design process, so that the monument would accurately reflect their thoughts and feelings about their work, and the contributions of their departed brothers and sisters in service
• The materials and design create a pleasant and meditative place for reflection, and uses plant materials to both create atmosphere and provide separation from the larger park space
• The design was carefully crafted to be easily maintained.
