City of Alexandria
Alexander Fulton founded the city of Alexandria next to the Red River. In the core of this original settlement, Moore Planning Group, LLC (MPG), Landscape Architects • Site Planners transformed an open green area into Alexander Fulton Park. The design intent was to transform this small grassy rectangle that bounds a busy parking lot into a creative, functional space that celebrates the city’s past, present and future.
The design is linked to Alexandria’s past with the reuse of old city street bricks in a plaza walkway that runs the length of the site. The cornerstone from the old city hall is displayed in a historical exhibit at one end of the walkway. Historical lighting enhances the park’s ties to the city’s past, while providing security for night visitors and events.
The present is represented by a large granite casting of the city seal at the center of the circular plaza. At the center of the park, a shaded space is provided for a variety of uses including lunch-hour picnics.
Colorful tile murals, painted by school children at a local annual art festival, were placed along an existing retaining wall. This wall represents the future and is the centerpiece of the park's design. Visions of a “peaceable kingdom,” with nations, people, animals, and the environment living in harmony are depicted in these murals.
MPG combined the art and history of the city to create this downtown urban park.
