Founded in 1720, Washington is the third oldest settlement in Louisiana. With a population of 1400 people, this friendly town is significant in maintaining its centuries of charm. New buildings have been constructed, but 80% of the town is recorded in the National Register of Historic Places. Known as Church’s Landing until 1835, Washington once prospered as a trading post and the only in-land port between New Orleans and St. Louis.

Moore Planning Group, LLC (MPG) worked in conjunction with the Atchafalaya Basin Program (ABP) and the Army Corp of Engineers to develop a master plan for the town. The purpose of the master plan was to give future direction with a special focus on preserving and enhancing the cultural richness and natural assets of the town.

MPG worked with the town through community visioning sessions and extensive inventory and research, to generate ideas and goals which would help the town to become a thriving community once again. Corridor and gateway enhancements showcase the appeal of the town while a town center area solidifies the character of the town and provides an area for cultural events. An interpretive facility is planned to connect the citizens of Washington with the Bayou Courtableau, and interpret the importance of the bayou in the early history of the town.

Based heavily on the visions and the goals of the local community, the master plan has became an action plan for advancements in the areas of tourism, infrastructure development, educational and cultural facilities, recreational development, and other areas required to help realize the future vision of the community.
