Local Design Firm’s Master Plan Helps Jackson Suburb Win Economic Development Award

The Moore Planning Group, LLC was credited on Wednesday for helping the City of Ridgeland, Mississippi take home the 2008 Municipal Excellence Award for Planning and Economic Development. MPG’s master plan for Ridgeland calls for a retail-rich city center and introduces an innovative, green “cluster housing” model for challenged neighborhoods. The plan also elevates green space to the same land use level as commercial space, a bold move to improve community health and attract new investment.

The award, co-sponsored by the Mississippi Municipal League (MML) and the Jackson Clarion-Ledger, was presented at the MML annual state conference on June 25, 2008.

MPG’s Ridgeland Area Master Plan, or RAMP, was developed over two years with substantial civic input, including web-based participation and public meetings. It was adopted by the city’s aldermen in March.

“The mayor, community and elected officials’ positive response to the Moore Planning Group's design process was overwhelming,” said Ridgeland Community Development Director Alan Hart, ASLA. “The end product and the immediate attention we have received from investors are more than we ever expected."

MPG founder and Principal Patrick C. Moore added that the Ridgeland plan demonstrates his firm’s commitment to sustainability and green planning principles.

“We are committed to helping communities grow in the right direction by using progressive designs that produce both economic development and good quality of life,” he said.

In its 26-year tenure, the award-winning Moore Planning Group has created designs and community master plans for dozens of private clients, cities, towns and expansive rural areas. Just since 2003, MPG has designed plans for Alexandria, Pineville, Lake Charles, Crowley, Central, Plaquemine, Avoyelles Parish, Iberville Parish and others and has helped clients land more than $40 million in funds for implementation.
