MPG Client City Lake Charles Shows Tenacity after Disaster; Opens New Downtown Lakefront

Moore Planning Group client, the City of Lake Charles, officially opens its Lakefront Promenade on Saturday, September 18, 2010, a $4.6 million project that creates stunning new public space on the city’s downtown waterfront. The Promenade,
now with the new Bord Du Lac Marina, is expected to significantly increase the area’s use, spark further development
and leverage new investment in the city’s adjacent downtown. The project is tied into a larger plan for continual redevelopment throughout the city, and is proof-positive of Lake Charles’s tenacity as it marks the Fifth Anniversary of Hurricane Rita later this month.

The new lakefront promenade includes a 2700-foot pedestrian right-of-way, themed landings, decorative paving and lighting,
benches, trees and landscaping, public art, shaded seating structures, and site furniture.

“Lakefront Promenade is a true marriage between the natural beauty and design inspired by local character. It has created
a bond for sense of place that has already excited visitors and residents alike. It’s the vision that this community has expressed for years,” said Patrick Moore, managing principal of site planners Moore Planning Group.

Lake Charles’s lakefront project stems from the city’s tenacity as it recovered from Hurricane Rita in 2005. Following Rita and Katrina, a statewide movement emerged to push for better planning statewide, described in the Louisiana Recovery
Authority’s Louisiana Speaks Regional Plan. The LRA funded planning charrettes in three key locations, including the City of Lake Charles, to establish early examples of good planning. Determined to rebuild using Smart Growth principles, Lake Charles is a true success story of what’s possible after a natural disaster.

In December of 2007, landscape architecture and community planning firm, Moore Planning Group, was brought in to further those planning efforts and create an implementation strategy that would ensure the multitude of projects stayed on track. MPG’s Lakefront Development Action Plan (LDAP) helped bring the Duany Plater-Zyberk master plan to fruition.

“We are very pleased to be a part of this first LDAP project,” said Moore. “LDAP has been about maximizing the natural assets of this city and inviting public and private partners to invest in its future success. The promenade is going to brand Lake Charles as a city that takes quality of life seriously.”
